3rd SBS - 14th Feb 2010

It was Valentine’s day and the eleven volunteers of Aashayein Mysore spent the day spreading love amongst the children of ‘Ashadayaka Seva Trust’.

Ashadayaka Seva Trust was established in the year 2003 with the main objective of Eradicating Child Labor and providing rehabilitation for the destitute children.

The volunteers arrived at about 8.30 to find out that the children were involved in Shloka (sanskrit hymns) session. The teacher was from a reputed educational institution close by and revealed to the volunteers that he would visit the place and conduct classes for 3 hours every weekend. He further opined that one should also take up the onus of instilling righteous values within the children apart from spreading hope.

After the prayers, children sat down for their breakfast. The volunteers served them with Idlis and Vada. During the breakfast, volunteers introduced themselves to the kids and vice versa. Many jokes were cracked and the kids had a hearty laugh. After the breakfast, hot badam milk was also offered to the kids.

After the breakfast it was as usual, time for some fun. The kids presented some of their talent in singing and dancing. The girls presented 3 dance performances.

The volunteers then helped the children with the game, ‘pin the elephant’s tail’. The game was to pin the tail to the elephants drawing, while being blindfolded. The children took turns to give it their best shot.

Every attempt was cheered by the crowd. Those who managed to do it correctly were given chocolates as prizes.

After the events, Mr. Suresh, caretaker of the place shared more information about the administration and about the children too. He pointed out that a majority of these children were either beggars or laborers before they were brought here for rehabilitation. In most of the cases these children hail from a family that was averse to the idea of educating their children.

He expressed that it was indeed a daunting task to get these children move beyond their past and convince them to take up education. He said that they would first get the children to feel like home and then relate to others in the place. Being a part of the group, he pointed out that it was easy to inculcate discipline within the children. He proudly pointed out that the trust has put all the residents to school without an exception.

He also spoke of the challenges faced by the trust. He pointed out that every year in the month of May-June the trust will be pressed hard for finances as the books, school fee and uniform requirements of the children have to be met. He requested the members of AF-Mysore to come forward and help them in this regard.

Finally he thanked the volunteers for coming over and making the Sunday happier and memorable to the children.

2nd Sunday Breakfast Serving

The nine enthusiastic volunteers visited Chamundi Children’s home on Sunday, 7th of February 2010 to spread hope among the 20 odd children. The venue architecturally resembled an ancestral residence with a large porch and wide corridors. The corridors were marked with pillars that rendered a sacred look to the place.

While speaking to the kids, it was learnt that they would get up at 5.30 AM everyday (Sunday included) and take part in the mass drill. Few of the volunteers, the late risers in particular were quite embarrassed to know this. And on the holidays and Sundays they would assist the care taker in cleaning the rooms, brooming the corridors, trimming the hedges and attending to other general maintenance. It was also learnt that few of the children have to walk couple of miles to take up their tuition everyday at 6 AM.

At 8.30 AM, the children assembled at their dining room and sat by their best buddies around the round table. Soon the breakfast was served to them. The kids took a moment out before to thank the lord for the meal. They sung a prayer in unison to the almighty seeking for his blessings and guidance.

The jokes and chit chat of the children at the breakfast table had innocence stamped all over it.

After the breakfast, the volunteers gathered around the common hall. The care taker of the children home informed the volunteers about the special measures that were taken up by the management to engage the residents with creative actions. She particularly pointed out the measures taken to get a ‘sugama sangeetha’ instructor and impart few classes of music to the children. She also mentioned about the ‘English’ teachers who would impart language classes to those pursuing their 9th and 10th standard schooling.

After the talk, the group (children + volunteers) resorted to some fun activities. It was decided that the kids will showcase some of their talents. It was a surprise that the kids had some of the group performances ready, thanks to the recently concluded republic day celebrations at the childrens home.

The group also visited the Anandalaya, Highway circle. Anandalaya is home to about 20 kids who have no other home to stay. The volunteers served breakfast to the residents there as well.

Aashayein – Mysore, Inaugural Act

Any other Sunday for the 30 odds kids at the Chayadevi Anathashrama, Mysore would have meant a routine breakfast and the usual loneliness that followed. But, Sunday, 31st of January 2010 was destined to be special. Over 50 volunteers of Aashayein Foundation came together to make a difference to the lives of 60 odd residents of the Chayadevi Anathashrama. The residents comprised of children, women and senior citizens. The volunteers gathered at the venue by 8.00AM and started the day off with serving breakfast to the residents. The event was a part of the 'Sunday Breakfast Serving' exercise of Aashayein Foundation - Mysore, intended to reach out to the children of various orphanages and underprivileged schools among other institutions.

Aashayein Foundation is a group of enthusiastic volunteers dedicated to spread joy and nurture hope among the underprivileged sections of the society. The vision is to empower the children with quality education and close mentoring so that they can confidently compete with the mainstream society. Clearly the emphasis is on leveraging education as a means to realize the vision. The experience of spending a day with the innocent souls was an enriching experience for the volunteers too.

Chuku Buku Railu...

The bogies of Aashayein Express ran back to back with those of Chayadevi express in a memorable journey round the corridors of the anathashrama. The maiden journey was to spread joy and goodwill along the corridors.

Dinka taka.. Dinka Taka… Dinn..

The kids threw in a surprise dance number...

“Dinka taka.. dinka taka …Dinn”

The catchy tune and the interesting lyrics was enough for few of the volunteers to join them.

Boom Boom Balloons…

The kids were led to a game of balloon bursting. A balloon was tied to each one’s ankle. The game was to balloons tied to the opponent’s foot, while watching out for their own. Multiple rounds of the game ensured hearty laughs among the crowd.
