Childhood and curiosity are perhaps synonymous. Curiosity not only makes children more observant but also makes them explore and discover newer things. Inquisitiveness sparks renewed interest in education, instils a sense of adventure and makes the child a confident learner.
Project Bookshelf strives to develop and support this natural inquisitiveness of children in orphanages and government schools in and around Mysore.
AF-Mysore kick started this ambitious project by creating the first Bookshelf at Government Higher Primary School, Bastipura Village on Thursday, Nov 1, 2012. The bookshelf compromised of thoughtfully assorted collection of Encyclopedias, story books, Nursery Rhymes, science experiments and books that aid in effective learning of arithmetic, language and arts.
Aashayein Foundation is grateful for the team of Oracle Volunteers (Bangalore) for sponsoring the first Bookshelf initiative. The Oracle Volunteers program supports employee volunteerism and works in partnership with nonprofit organizations globally. We are also thankful to the team for joining us on the occasion and brainstorm on the further extensions of this project.
Next Steps:
- Index the resources in the bookshelf
- Put in place the processes for children to borrow the resources
- Improve the bookshelf with more resources (as and when required)
- Encourage faculty to leverage the resources in classroom teaching
- Encourage children to explore the bookshelf in their spare time
- Periodically monitor the usage of the Bookshelf and it's impact
